The flyball course includes a start/finish line, a line of four hurdles, and a box that releases a tennis ball that each dog catches after pressing a spring loaded pad. Once the dog has the ball, he or she returns to the handler and the next dog goes.
Any type of dog, even mixed breeds, can participate in flyball, though dogs with high work drives (Border Collies, Terriers) are the most common. Flyball organizations host trials and competitions throughout North America and around the world, but a large part of the sport’s popularity is the relaxed, social atmosphere common to most events. Flyball is an excellent sport for handler and dog teams looking for a fun way to condition and enjoy time working as a team.
