Flyball Training & Equipment

Flyballers generally train as a team, anywhere they can find enough space to set up the track! Parking garages, open fields, and empty warehouses provide enough space, and often the club captain hauls the team’s equipment around.

Flyball dogs must be well-conditioned, ball-driven, and responsive to his handlers commands. The sport is all about speed and timing, so frequent practice is necessary to be competitive.

The equipment needed for flyball includes:

• Flyball Box: The flyball box must be stable and durable. It includes a spring-loaded ball release that is activated by the dog stepping on the front surface. NAFA has established certain requirements for the flyball box, but there are still a variety to choose from.
• Jumps: The race to the flyball box includes a set of jumps which also must meet NAFA’s standards. Jumps can be made of wood or plastic, and the height of the jump depends on the size of the smallest dog on the team.
• Balls: The balls are typically tennis balls (or mini-balls).
